Did you know that when Marymount Academy opened in Tarrytown with just six students, Mother Butler immediately began planning a much larger building because she was convinced the school would grow? Or that she championed retreats for working women at a time when they were still uncommon?
Sr. Kathleen also reveals how Mother Butler recognized that young women wanted more than a secondary education. What began as students choosing to stay for a fifth and sixth year eventually grew into the Marymount colleges, opening new opportunities for women’s higher education in America.
Perhaps most remarkable was her global vision. In 1923 alone, Mother Butler helped establish new Marymount foundations in Los Angeles and Paris, and from the very beginning she envisioned the schools as connected—sharing one mission, one spirit, and one educational vision across continents.
